Antioxidant and antibacterial properties of extracts of endophytic fungi associated with the Mangosteen plant (Garcinia mangostana Linn.: Clusiaceae)
Totally of 41 endophytic fungi isolates have been obtained from the leaves, twigs and fruits ofmangosteen (Garcinia mangostana Linn.: Clusiaceae). Based on their morphological characters, the isolated endophytic fungi that were found belongs to 7 genera. Eachof isolated endophytic fungi was cultivated in 200 ml of liquid medium of PDB(41 isolates) and GYP (39 isolates), and incubated on still condition at room temperature. After 3 weeks, the fungi culture were extracted with ethyl acetate and dried under reduce pressure to achieve dry extract. Furthermore, all of extract were then submitted on antioxidant (DPPH assay) and antibacterial TLC bioautography assays. The results showed that 49 fungal extracts (61.25 persen) were active as antioxidant, 57 fungal extracts (71.25 persen)were active as antibacterial against Escherichia coliInaCC-B5 and50 fungal extracts (62.5 persen) were active as antibacterial against Staphylococcus aureus InaCC-B4, and 3 fungal extracts (3.75 persen) were active against Mycobacterium smegmatis. These indicates thatfungal endophytic extracts isolated from Garcinia mangostana are potential sourcesas antioxidant and antibacterial. Keywords—antibacterial, antioxidant, fungal endophytic extract, Garcinia mangostana Proceeding of 2nd International Biology Conference (IBOC) 2014 vol. 2 : 123-127
