Dipterocarpaceae Potential As C02 Absorber And Carbon Storage In Bogor Botanical Gardens
Dipterocarpaceae is one of common groups of plants found in tropical rain forests of Indonesia. The Dipterocarpaceae family is known not only as a source of major timber but also as potential absorber of carbon dioxide and carbon storage. In an attempt to determine mean annual increment (MAI), ability in CO2 absorption and carbon storage of Dipterocarpaceae in Bogor Botanical Gardens, this study was conducted to 15 species of Dipterocarpaceae collected in the Garden. The absorption of CO2 and C storage was predicted using non-destructive biomass sampling by allometric model. MAI of overall Dipterocarpaceae observed was 1.23 cm/yr, whilst absorption of CO2 and C storage per individual tree was 167.30 kg CO2 /yr and 45.63 kg C /yr, respectively. Among 15 species observed, the highest potential in CO2 absorption and C-storage per tree was shown by Vatica bella (385.77 kg CO2/yr, 105.21 kg C/yr), followed by Hopea sangal (295.98 kg CO2/yr, 80.72 kg C/yr) and Shorea guiso (319.87 kg CO2/yr, 87.24 kg C/yr).
