Functional Groups and Toxicity of Hexane-Ethyl Acetate Fraction of Nutmeg Fruit (Myristica fragrans) Oil from Bogor
This research evaluated the components of nutmeg oil (Myristica fragrans) produced from distillation process of nutmeg fruit. Phyto-chemical evaluation of nutmeg was conducted to determine the secondary metabolite in the nutmeg. The components of crude oil were separated by thin layer chromatography and subsequently by column chromatography. The best eluent was determined based on the effectiveness to separate crude oil components. The functional groups in nutmeg oil fractions were analyzed by Fourier Transform Infra Red (FT-IR). The fraction toxicity was evaluated by brine shrimp lethality test. The amount of Fe in nutmeg fruit was measured by atomic absorption spectrofotometer (AAS). Alkaloid and flavonoid were the secondary metabolite identified in the nutmeg. The best eluent to elucidate nutmeg oil fraction was hexane : ethyl-acetate (7:3). The functional groups in the fraction of nutmeg oil that identified by FTIR were determined as flavonoid. It was found that up to 1000 ppm, the nutmeg oil fraction was non toxic. There was 4.59 ppm Fe found in the fruit nutmeg ash based on AAS analysis. The 1st International Symposium for Sustainable Humanosphere. Hal. 63-71 ISSN 2088-9127
