Kima Biota Eksotik Perairan Indo-Pasifik
“Giant Clam”, the Exotic Animal of the Indo-Pasific Waters. The giant clams are a type of large-size clams of the family Cardiidae and subfamily Tridacninae. This group is divided into two genera (Hippopus and Tridacna) containing ten species, i.e. two species of Hippopus (H. hippopus, H. porcellanus) and eight species of Tridacna (T. gigas, T. maxima, T. crocea, T. squamosa, T. derasa, T. rosewatari, T. tevoroa, and T. costata). The major difference between normal clams and giant clams is the presence of symbiotic zooxanthellae in giant clams, which provides the colors on giant clam. The giant clams are distributed almost throughout the Indo-Pacific waters, and some are in the Red Sea. The giant clams is a hermaphrodite animal which has two sex organs, male and female. In the spawning time, sperms are released first before the eggs. In its life cycle, the giant clams would metamorphose and then having symbiosis with zooxanthellae.
