Development of Magnesium Alloy Foam with TiH2 as Foaming Agent

In present paper, alloys foam based on the Mg-Zn-Ca system were produced by powder metallurgy method with the addition of TiH2 as a blowing agent. Sintering process carried out at 650°C during 2 hours with 0.5 persen and 3 persenwt TiH2 content. The as-sintered alloys were characterized by Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), X-Ray Diffractometer (XRD) and Energy Dispersive Spectrometer (EDS). The Mg-1Ca-3Zn-0.5TiH2 and Mg-1Ca-3Zn-3TiH2 samples were mainly composed of α-Mg, Ca2Mg6Zn3, MgZn2 and Mg2Ca along with MgO and TiO2 as impurity also a small quantity of TiZn2. The result showed that the metallic foam were low porous and non-uniform structure. During the foaming process, the alloys were sintered or melted in both cases and some of the imperfections observed in early stages were disappeared. Yet, some of the non-uniformities were still present in the fully expanded foam. The final foaming were slightly shorter with higher TiH2 content.
