Management culture of the redclaw Cherax quadricarinatus
In North Queensland Australia, good management culture practices were applied. The farm have water supply or groundwater which can be pumped to the ponds and the soil is clay that can reduce seepage. Aeration is obtained by using paddle wheels and airlift pump. Moreover, liming the pond and used of fertilizer was also applied to increase the nutrient in the pond. The most common factor inhibit crayfish production is predation by water rats and bird. To deal with those problems, farmers use net for covering the ponds and fencing the ponds. However, the farm lacks to have water quality check and the stocking density of crayfish too high due to efficiency production cost. Redclaw are harvested by flow trap and then purging for one day to improve the taste and clean from mud. The good quality for market is redclaw which have weight around 130-150 gram. In the future, aquaculture strategies such as culturing monosex male redclaw is good choice because male grow faster and bigger than female. Jurnal Perikanan dan Kelautan Univ. Negeri Papua. Vol.6.
