Marine Procaryotes in Indonesia: Research History and Potential Use in Biotechnology
Marine procaryotes are the most abundant microorganisms in the sea, yet they are still underexplored, particularly in Indonesia. This paper has two objectives. The first objective is to describe the research history of marine procaryotes in Indonesia, with emphasis on the last 40 years studies. The second objective is to briefly review the isolation of marine procaryotes in Indonesia and their potential use in biotechnology to encourage the intensification of studies in this field. Although use of marine procaryotes in biotechnology is still in its infancy in Indonesia, its perspective of development is showing a bright future.
