Karakteristik Penangkapan Ular di Wilayah Sumatera Utara Characteristics of Snakes Harvesting in North Sumatra
Several species of snakes exported from Indonesia are under the world attention, i.e. Python reticulatus (reticulated python), and the group of "blood python" P. curtus and P. brongersmai. Those species are listed in CITES Appendix II. One of the problems in understanding the wild population conditions of this reptile group is the extent of habitat and geographical distribution, apart from the nature of the animal itself that is not possible to be censuses within a short period of time. Therefore an indirect assessment is necessary to be undertaken which can be used as a reflection of their population in the wild. The study was conducted in September 2008 using survey method with snow ball technique. Surveys were done by visiting collectors, agents and people active in wildlife collections, from the region of Nangro Aceh Darussalam to Rantau Prapat. The results showed that the wildlife collections in North Sumatra involved significant number of public members. Qualitatively, by evaluating the snake length received at the collectors, there was a tendency of reduction for P. reticulatus, but not so prominent for P. brongersmai and P. curtus. However, in terms of catchment populations effort in all groups there was a tendency of decreasing compared to the period of ten years ago, and this needs to be studied further.
