A preliminary study on the understorey birds community in peatswamp forest of Giam Siak Kecil-Bukit batu Biosphere Reserve
The understory birds’ communities in peat swamp forest of Giam Siak-Bukit Batu Biosphere Reserve were inventoried in two locations i.e. Makmur and Humus district for 84 mist netting days. A total of 117 individuals from 30 species were caught. Off that numbers, 97 birds were banded, 6 birds were collected and 20 birds were released without bands. Members from the group of Timaliidae and Nectariniidae made up the most numerous species in both locations. Species with globally significant status were 11 in which 1 was categorized as Vulnerable (Hook-billed Bulbul, Setornis criniger) and 10 species were Near Threatened. Numbers of caught birds between two sites differ significantly, 14 individual from 12 species at Makmur and 103 from 26 species at Humus; and the index of diversity at Humus tend to be higher than Makmur (Shannon=2.44 and 2.67, value on Humus and Makmur respectively). The degree of disturbance and the availability of food resources at both sites may influenced the species composition and population in Giam Siak-Bukit Batu Biosphere Reserve.
