Anatomy and Ultrastructure of Simpur Wood (Dillenia Sp.)
Simpur wood or Dillenia sp, as one of the Indonesian fast growing tree species, has been studied extensively. In this study, morphological, anatomical and ultrastructure features of Dillenia sp. were examined by light microscope (Primostar Zeiss and Axio Imager A1m Zeiss) and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM Zeiss EVO 50). The results showed that growth rings of the wood were indistinct. Two types of parenchyma were found; paratracheal axialand apotracheal axial. The wood involved two sizes of rays: uniseriate and 3-5 seriates. Other characteristics of the wood are vessels diffuse, predominantly solitary, moderately large and distinct. Perforation scalariform with 20-40 bars. Fibers very thickwalls with distinctly bordered pits mainly in the radial walls, and have 1-3 mm long. Simpur wood also has long fibers and potential for pulp and paper production. Proceedings of The 7th International Symposium of IWoRS 5-6 November 2015, Bandung. Hal. 207-214 ISSN 2459-9867
